MENTAL PREPARATION
Before arriving to a new country there’s always a lot of questions. What is it going be like, will it be like I’ve expected, more or something else? No matter what your opinions and expectations are, your stay in Örebro will probably change your views after spending some time here.
The best way to not make these cultural differences turn into a cultural shock is to be prepared. You can prepare yourself by searching and reading information about Örebro and Sweden before arriving. You should keep in mind that going to another country means that things are not in the way you are used to.
We can’t promise that the transition to a life in Sweden will be easy and we can't make the cultural differences disappear, but we do promise you that there will be someone to turn to with questions or for help. As long as we all have an open mind for new experiences we can learn a lot from each other. That is our experience from working with this for a long time.
PRACTICAL THINGS
Remember to bring:
Your passport, we sometimes do trips outside of Sweden. Even if you are a member of the EU it’s a good identification, you’ll need some kind of valid identification (like a drivers liscence) to be able to get in to pubs and discos.
Also it is adviceable to pack some clothes, a tooth brush and your important papers in your hand luggage in case your other luggage will get lost on the way. Bring clothes for the right seasons. For the winter you will need a beanie(hat), scarf, gloves, sweater, jacket, warm pants and warm shoes.
Further we recommend bring some information and small things from your country and university. There will be a special International Day at the University. Some examples of small things to bring can be flags, pins or typical cookies from your country. Also bring some photos of your family, friends and homwtown. It is always nice to be able to show your origins for your new friends in Sweden.
All the student accomodation in Örebro are provided with internet connection but you need to bring your own network cable which should be a ethernet cable (twisted).
If you are coming as an exchange student or master student to Örebro you will receive a swedish SIM card for your mobile phone (cellular). So you can bring you own mobile and just put it in there. Just make sure it is not locked to a specific provider and compatible with the GSM network.
INSURANCE
Please make sure you have a valid insurance when coming to Sweden. Otherwise your stay here might become costly if you get sick or end up in an accident or so. It is your own responsibility to be insured!
Also it is very important for EU citizens to bring the purple EU Health Insurance Card
EU Health Insurance Card
This is card is not an insurance per se but shows that you have the same rights to medical care as the swedish citizens.
